Duty increase requested in South Africa on biaxially orientated polypropylene (BOPP)

By October 27, 2021 No Comments

On 22 October 2021 SFR Flexipak applied for a duty increase on BOPP, classifiable under tariff subheadings 3920.20.50 and 3920.20.55, from free of duty to 10% through the creation of two additional 8-digit tariff subheadings. The two-tariff subheading differentiates between metalized and not metallized BOPP.

Reason for application includes:

  • BOPP keeps being imported despite the availability of locally manufactured BOPP.
  • SFR is continuously challenged by imports from various countries, including Europe.
  • South Africa is becoming an attractive target for BOPP imports and because thereof SFR has undertaken various initiatives to protect and grow their investments and market share to show their commitment to growing the South African market.

Interested parties have until 19 November 2021 to respond.
